Deep Sea Dry Land is a training app for youth hockey players, their parents and guardians, and their coaches. Many of the players who use it are children. This page says what we collect, why, who can see it, who helps us run the service, and how to have it changed or deleted. Questions go to chrisbell@f2mail.com.
The short version
- We collect what the app needs to run a team's training: names, teams, workouts, and what people post.
- We don't sell personal information, and we don't show ads or use advertising trackers.
- Sonar counts reps with the camera on the device. The picture never leaves it.
- A parent or guardian can see, change, or ask us to delete their child's account.
Children
Player accounts are created by a club, a coach, or a parent or guardian, or from an invitation one of them sends. A player's parent or guardian is linked to their account, receives the messages sent to the player, and can review or change the player's information. To see or correct what we hold about your child, email us. To have their account deleted, use Me → Delete my account (for a parent, Delete an account) in the iPhone app, or email us. If you believe a child's information reached us without a parent's or club's involvement, email us and we will delete it.
What we collect
- Account details: name, email address (optional for players), phone number if given, role, team, and club.
- Player details: position and jersey number, a personal goal the player writes, and a profile photo and pictures if they add them. A player's birth date or birth year and USA Hockey number, when a club records them, are visible to staff only.
- Training: workouts completed, times, counts and measurements, points, streaks, badges, and answers to Hockey IQ questions.
- What people post: film reviews and coach replies, reactions, team photos (including the jersey numbers tagged in them), game film and game statistics.
- Sign-in and messages: sign-in codes and when they were used, and a record of the emails and notifications we sent.
- Devices: if you turn on notifications in the iPhone app, the phone's notification token and its name (for example “Sam's iPhone”), so we can send to it and remove it when you sign out.
- Usage: which parts of the site and app are used, counted by us. We use no third-party analytics or crash-reporting services.
The camera
Sonar uses the camera to count reps. The video is analyzed on the phone or computer and only the counts are saved — nothing is recorded or uploaded. Separately, a small number of practice clips may be recorded for improving Sonar, only with a parent's written consent; those clips are not connected to anyone's account.
How we use it
To run the service: show players their programs and progress, let coaches run their teams, keep team boards, feeds and film, send the emails and notifications people expect, check uploads for inappropriate content, and keep the service secure. We don't use personal information for advertising.
Who can see what
- Teammates and their families see names, profile photos and pictures, personal goals, the team leaderboard and feed, published film reviews, and team photos. A family can opt out of team photos.
- Friends at other clubs see each other's names, teams and points on the friends board. A parent is told when their child sends a friend request.
- Chess: a game is seen by its two players, their parents, and the coaches of their teams. There is no chat. The team feed shows who played and who won — never the moves or any reward — and only for games between two kids, never a game a parent plays with their child. A parent gets a copy of every chess email and phone notification their child gets. A player's chess rating is shown to the people they can play and to anyone who can see a game they're in, and a team's ladder (that team's kids only) is visible to the team's players and families, its coaches and the club's administrators.
- Coaches see their own teams' players and training. Parents see their own children's. Club administrators see their club.
- Photos and videos are delivered from links that can be opened by anyone who has the exact link, until the photo or video is taken down.
Who helps us run it
These companies process information for us to provide the service:
- Amazon Web Services — hosting, storage and content delivery; sending email; sending iPhone notifications (through Apple); checking uploaded images and videos for inappropriate content and, on team photos, finding people and jersey numbers (no face recognition is used); converting videos; and making subtitles for coaching videos.
- Anthropic (Claude, through Amazon Bedrock) — checking film reviews before teammates see them, reading game sheets, and helping coaches write training content and video chapters.
- OpenAI — making cover pictures for coaching videos, which can include a frame from the video.
- YouTube — some videos are YouTube videos played inside the app, under YouTube's own privacy policy.
- Google — web fonts, and the pose model Sonar downloads to the device. Your device asks Google for these directly, which shares its internet address.
Reporting and blocking
In the iPhone app you can report a film review, a coach reply, a team photo or a profile. A report goes to us, and usually to the team's coaches too. It never goes to the person who posted it or their parents, and they aren't told who reported it. You can also block someone: their film reviews, replies and profile pictures are then hidden for you in the app, and their friend requests stop showing in your list. They aren't told. We get a note, so we know.
Keeping and deleting information
We keep information while an account is in use. To delete an account, use Me → Delete my account (for a parent, Delete an account) in the iPhone app, or email us. A parent or guardian can ask for their child's account to be deleted the same way. We complete deletion requests within 7 days.
Deleting an account deletes the personal information connected to it: the login, profile, photo and pictures, workouts and stats, Hockey IQ answers, film reviews, reactions, photo tags, event replies, game statistics, friends, blocks and reports, and our record of the emails and notifications sent to its own address. A few things are kept without the person's name or account, because deleting them would change something that belongs to others: a team store purchase record (so a gift code can't be sold twice), goals in a game's score, team photos they uploaded or appear in (their tag is removed), award lists that name other winners, and replies a coach wrote on players' film reviews (signed “A former coach”). An unsubscribe is kept so it keeps working. Emails we've already sent stay in the inboxes they went to. Rosters and game summaries imported from game sheets or game film can still list a player's name and number; email us and we'll remove them. Copies in our backups expire within 35 days.
Security
Information is stored with Amazon Web Services and travels over encrypted connections.
Changes
When this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top, and for significant changes we'll tell account holders by email.
