Pirates vs the Royal Navy

Pick a route, climb ten ranks, and raid the other side — the whole season, explained.

September 6–20

Two routes sail these waters, and every athlete picks one. The first event runs 15 days — and it is the first of several this season, so everything you earn in it is still yours in the next one. You can't choose yet: this page is here so you have time to think about it, and to argue about it with your teammates.

You pick once, and it's yours

On the day the event opens you'll be asked one question: Pirates or the Royal Navy? You pick for yourself, once, and you sail with them for the rest of the season — not just this event. There's a short window right after you choose in case you tapped the wrong one — after that it stands until you change teams.

Your friends can be on either side. You still train together, you're still on the same team, and your team's leaderboards don't change at all. The route is a layer on top of the training you already do — it never replaces it.

Both sides climb at the same speed
The two routes are different, not unequal. Ranks cost exactly the same on both sides, and every rank is reached the same way: by training. Pick the one you like the sound of.

The two routes

Same ladder, same climb, different kit. Pirates work in Doubloons — the coins you spend in the store. The Royal Navy works in Points — the score on your team's board. Both are worth having; which one sounds more like you is the whole question.

The Pirates crew aboard their ship

The PiratesLoot. Luck. Raids.

Pirates fill their pockets. Chests pay you extra, comebacks cost you less, and a lucky day pays luckier.

  • Plunder IEvery chest you earn gives you extra Doubloons (+10%).
  • BarnacleStick a barnacle on a rival Navy crest for a day. They scrub it off by finishing any workout.
  • Second WindStreak Freezes and Streak Restores cost half.
  • Walk the PlankA rival whose XP Boost is still running walks the plank: half of what's left is gone, and you sail off with it.

…and 6 more, unlocked as you climb.

The Royal Navy crew aboard their ship

The Royal NavyFull sail. Double points.

The Royal Navy sails faster. You double your points when you choose to, and you can shield yourself and your shipmates.

  • Full SailHoist full sail: for the next 12 hours every workout earns double points.
  • Signal FlagsFly silly flags on a rival Pirate's crest for a day. They clear them by finishing any workout.
  • ProvisionsXP Boosts cost 40 Doubloons instead of 50.
  • EscortPut an escort on yourself or a shipmate for a week: the next raid on them bounces off.

…and 6 more, unlocked as you climb.

Ten ranks, and how you climb them

Everyone starts at rank 1 and climbs to 10. You climb with rank points, and rank points are the score you already earn every week: workouts, the minutes you train, the days you show up, and your XP Boost when one is running. There is no separate thing to grind — training is the game.

The ladder gets steeper as you go, and it is built for the whole season — not for one event. Nobody climbs all ten ranks in a fortnight, and nobody is meant to: an athlete doing about 60% of what their coach assigns is around the third rank when this event closes, and picks the climb back up in the next one. The season runs to March 1.

It's two weeks — and then it keeps going

The Maiden Voyage runs 15 days, and it is the first of several events this season. That is the bit worth understanding, because a ten-rank ladder in a fortnight would look impossible: it is not one climb per event. It is one climb across the whole season, and the events are when you get to usewhat you have climbed.

Nothing you earn expires
There is no point in the season where your rank goes back to zero. Every workout you do counts toward the same ladder, all year.

Skills — the ones you have, and the ones you use

Every rank you reach unlocks something. Half of them are always on during an event — you don't press anything, they just make your chests pay more or your prices cheaper. The other half you spend: they have a charge or two a week, and the charges come back every Sunday whether you used them or not. Skills only work while an event is running — between events they rest, and every one you have unlocked is waiting for you when the next event starts.

The Pirates

  • Plunder I · rank 1 · always on during an event
Every chest you earn gives you extra Doubloons (+10%).
  • Barnacle · rank 2 · once a week — twice that at the top rank
Stick a barnacle on a rival Navy crest for a day. They scrub it off by finishing any workout.
  • Second Wind · rank 3 · always on during an event
Streak Freezes and Streak Restores cost half.
  • Walk the Plank · rank 4 · once a week — twice that at the top rank
A rival whose XP Boost is still running walks the plank: half of what's left is gone, and you sail off with it.
  • Lucky Dice · rank 5 · always on during an event
Your daily chest has a better chance of being rare or better.
  • Smoke Screen · rank 6 · once a week
Vanish for a week: the next raid aimed at you misses.
  • Plunder II · rank 7 · always on during an event
Every chest you earn gives you extra Doubloons (+20%).
  • Sea Shanty · rank 8 · once a week
Every Pirate on your team gets extra Doubloons from chests for a day.
  • Treasure Map · rank 9 · always on during an event
Train on 5 different days in a week and a Rare chest washes up on Sunday. All 7 days: an Epic one.
  • Legend's Hoard · rank 10 · the top rank
A Legendary chest, your pranks and raids twice a week, a gold crest — and the Pirate Legend insignia.

The Royal Navy

  • Full Sail · rank 1 · once a week — twice that at the top rank
Hoist full sail: for the next 12 hours every workout earns double points.
  • Signal Flags · rank 2 · once a week
Fly silly flags on a rival Pirate's crest for a day. They clear them by finishing any workout.
  • Provisions · rank 3 · always on during an event
XP Boosts cost 40 Doubloons instead of 50.
  • Escort · rank 4 · once a week — twice that at the top rank
Put an escort on yourself or a shipmate for a week: the next raid on them bounces off.
  • Ship-Shape · rank 5 · always on during an event
Train on 5 different days in a week and next week's Full Sail lasts 18 hours. All 7 days: a whole day.
  • Harbor Toll · rank 6 · once a week
Charge a rival Pirate a harbor toll: the next chest they earn pays you a fifth of it.
  • Fair Winds · rank 7 · always on during an event
XP Boosts you buy last a day and a half instead of a day.
  • Fleet Signal · rank 8 · once a week
Signal the fleet: every Navy shipmate on your team gets 3 hours of double points.
  • Morning Colors · rank 9 · always on during an event
Workouts you finish before 9 in the morning earn double points.
  • Fleet Review · rank 10 · the top rank
A Legendary chest, Full Sail and Escort twice a week, a gold crest — and the Admiral of the Fleet insignia.

Raiding the other side

Some skills are pointed at a rival on your own team. A Pirate can make a Navy officer walk the plank; a Navy officer can charge a Pirate a harbor toll. It is the part kids ask about first and the part grown-ups ask about hardest, so here is exactly what one can and cannot do.

What a raid can do

  • Shorten an XP Boost that is already running — never more than half of what is left
  • Take up to a fifth of the Doubloons from one chest, before you open it
  • Stick a barnacle or a silly flag on your crest for a day — finishing any workout scrubs it off

What a raid can never do

  • Take a workout, a minute, or a day you trained
  • Break or shorten your streak
  • Take Doubloons out of your balance
  • Take a rank, a record, or a badge you earned
  • Happen more than once a week from the same person
  • Happen at all if your coach or your grown-up switches raids off
Grown-ups hold the switch
Raids are off by default for the youngest age groups. A coach can switch them off for the whole team, and a parent or guardian can switch them off for their own athlete, at any time, without switching off ranks or skills. Every raid that does happen is written on the team feed where the coach can see it.

The War of the Week

A pirate flag and a navy crown-and-anchor flag crossed behind a gold rope ring

Every Sunday during an event, the two sides on your team are compared, and one of them takes the week. Between events the war rests too. It is the friendly part of the rivalry — nobody loses anything by losing it.

What this game can never take

This is a season-long game layered on top of training, and the training is the part that counts. So the rule underneath all of it is simple: nothing you actually earned can be taken away by anybody. Not by a rival, not by a raid, not by losing a week.

The whole thing is a consistency engine in a pirate hat
Every rank, every skill and every chest is paid for by the same thing: showing up and training. There is no shortcut, because there is nothing to shortcut to.

Questions

Can I change sides if I don't like mine?
Not during the season — that's what makes it a choice worth making. There's a short undo window right after you pick in case you tapped the wrong button, and your route resets if you move to a different team.
Is one side better than the other?
No. Ranks cost the same on both sides and both are reached by training. The kits do different things — Pirates move Doubloons, the Royal Navy moves Points — so pick the one you like, not the one you think will win.
What if my friends all pick the other one?
Nothing changes about training together. You're on the same team, the same leaderboard, and the same workouts. Being on opposite routes just means you get to tease each other on Sundays.
Can someone raid me over and over?
No. The same person can raid you at most once a week, and there are skills on both sides that block the next raid aimed at you. If you'd rather not be raided at all, ask your grown-up or your coach to switch it off — you keep every rank and skill either way.
Do I have to join?
No. Everything you had before this is unchanged if you never pick a side. You can also take your time — the choice waits for you.
When does it start and end?
The Maiden Voyage runs September 6–2015 days. More events follow through the season, which runs to March 1.
What happens to my rank when the event ends?
Nothing — you keep it. Your rank, your rank points and every skill you have unlocked carry straight into the next event. Training in between still counts toward the same ladder. The only things that reset are your weekly skill charges and the war.
Can I still reach the top rank in two weeks?
No, and nobody can — the ladder is built for the whole season, not for one event. An athlete doing about 60% of what their coach assigns is around the third rank when this one closes. You pick the climb back up next time.
